The Deal-Trak story begins back when Derek was running portfolio management at a medium sized private equity firm. Acting as a point of contact for multiple groups, he realized that there were multiple versions of supposedly the same data. Trying to extract excel-based data from the different business units was tedious and took an excessive amount of time to reconcile. Knowing that there was a better way of tracking all the data, he built a system himself. Over the period of a few months, Derek built a standardized excel template that connected to a SQL Server database that allowed for importing and exporting real-time data. Standardized reports were generated out of the database that were used for the Deal Team, Legal & Compliance and the back office. Derek thought that the benefits gained were only a fraction of what it could be accomplished by building a web-application. With management happy with the system in place and not having an appetite to build a more robust application, Derek left the firm to build Deal-Trak. It's taken well over a year to build Deal-Trak.
